Young Women Development Programme enable women to excell in various industries

11 Aug 2010 - South Africa has an abundance of empowered and informed women who are making their mark in various industries. However, the opposite side of the coin is that there are young women who do not allow themselves to dream big because they believe that they are inferior to the opposite sex.

As the world comes together to celebrate the 92nd birthday of former President Nelson Mandela on 18 July 2010, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will join the Ministry of Higher Education and Training during the launch of their career guidance programme in Giyani Limpopo. This is part of marking the 67 minutes campaign dedicated to this world icon. The United Nations General Assembly declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the former President’s work and struggle for human rights and freedom.

NYDA’s poultry project opens doors for rural based youth

14 July 2010 - The establishment of the Rural Development and Land Affairs Department has reinforced government’s commitment to improving the lives of rural based South Africans. Today, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in collaboration with the Mtubatuba Municipality will launch the Mtubatuba Poultry Project, which is specifically targeted at rural and peri-urban based young South Africans.

NYDA welcomes the IAAF decision on Golden Girl, Caster Semenya

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) welcomes the decision of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to clear South Africa’s South African 800m world champion, Caster Semenya to compete as a woman. “At no point was the NYDA ever doubtful that Caster would be cleared and as such we celebrate without reservations her come back to the race track to rightfully compete amongst other female athletes,” says NYDA Chairperson Andile Lungisa. Lungisa says as a young woman Caster has displayed a resilient character befitting of a sports champion throughout the ordeal. “However no human being should ever have to undergo such humiliation,” he adds.

Lidonga Technology launches awards for young inventors

Ten South Africans aged between 18 and 35 years have the opportunity to win bursaries if their inventions impress the judges appointed by Lidonga Technology for the Lidonga Foundation.

Announcing the awards, Executive Chairman Connie Nkosi says the main criteria will be that the inventions have commercial worth. “We are looking for technical innovation of interest to the corporate sector.”

Youth Month Celebrations

16 June 2010 marks the 34th anniversary of the Soweto and related Uprisings of 1976. This year’s commemoration especially takes place within the context of the first anniversary of the establishment of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), a South African agency responsible for coordinating youth development across spheres of government and the private sector.

Volunteers for the Youthbuild 2010 needed!

A call goes out to NYDA staff to join youth volunteers and the community of Ivory Park during the construction of the 76 houses in ward 78 and 79 in Ivory Park. Volunteers who are willing to participate can forward their names to Mpho Nche or Oupa Tshabalala and must ndicate on which day they are available to volunteer.

NYDA commends the Ministries of Defence and Military Veterans and Justice and Constitutional Development on the proposed National Service
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) welcomes the proposal by Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu to introduce a National Service for young people in the military and further calls on other government departments to follow suit. “We view the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans as very well placed to undertake such an exercise at a massive scale considering the facilities at their disposal including their training bases that can be used to accommodate young people while they undergo various service training,” says NYDA CEO Steven Ngubeni.

NYDA hands over 100 bicycles to learners in rural Jozini
A total of 100 learners from disadvantaged backgrounds have received brand new bicycles from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) during an event held at the Jozini stadium, KwaZulu Natal earlier today. This is part of the “Ride to School Bicycle Project” aimed at improving the mobility of female learners by providing bicycles to those who walk long distances to schools on a daily basis.

07/05/2010 - The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) are set to embark on a four week youth mobilisation campaign as part of a 2010 Soccer World Cup Legacy Programme. This follows an observation that though South Africa will be hosting the biggest soccer showpiece in the world, there is still limited youth participation in this once in a lifetime historical event.

19/04/2010 - The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) wishes to congratulate all South African Music Awards (SAMA) winners in this year’s 16th annual awards ceremony held at the Sun City over the weekend. It is the view of the NYDA that ongoing recognition of local musicians and their music will go a long way in developing the industry and promoting South African local content in the media. Buy Youth campaign in KZN to encourage big business to buy from youth-owned SMEs
15/04/2010 - According to the 2009 SME survey, access to market is one of the most prevalent challenges faced by most emerging SMEs in the country. To address this challenge, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has been running a campaign across South Africa aimed at getting big companies to procure from youth-owned SMEs. The Buy Youth Campaign, which will make its next stop in Durban, KwaZulu Natal on 15 April 2010, will create a platform for both industry buyers and youth owned SMEs to convene, engage and conduct business while creating access to market opportunities to benefit both buyers and SMEs.

Upcoming Limpopo Business Exhibition and Entrepreneurship Development Conference aims to unlock opportunities for Limpopo based young entrepreneurs
14/04/2010 - Aspiring and established young entrepreneurs in mainly rural provinces often overlook entrepreneurship opportunities right on their door steps and flock to urban areas. In 2009, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) commissioned research that looked at entrepreneurship development in Limpopo, a mainly rural province. The study revealed that opportunities exist in mining, transport, tourism, agriculture and related manufacturing industries.

Graduation ceremony celebrates 80 young people who have acquired much needed artisan skills
25/03/2010 - A 2007 research report for the infrastructure inputs sector strategy released by the Presidency states that in order to construct the 40 million houses imperative for South Africa, the following skilled workers will be needed between 2010 and 2016; 6 235 Construction Managers/Supervisors, 1 871 General and Project Managers and 624 Structural Engineers.
