Calling on Mentors for young Entrepreneurs

Ithuba Lentsha

Youth today face a myriad of challenges which hinder and stifle their socio-economic development, consequent economic prosperity, and achievement of sustainable livelihoods. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has developed the Ithubalentsha Micro Enterprise Programme to rapidly address some major limitations/constraints faced by the youth of South Africa. “Ithubalenthsa” is a Zulu word that means “An Opportunity for Youth”. In order to make this new programme a success, we are calling on the assistance of mentors to volunteer young, up-and-coming entrepreneurs through a formalised and structured programme.

The overall objective of the programme is to scale-up access of quality and sustainable enterprise development products and services by the South African youth (aged between 18 and 35 years), and particularly those in peri-urban and rural areas. Those with disabilities are also encouraged to participate. Overall the programme is aimed at improving incomes and creating job opportunities, but more importantly, ensuring the self-sustainability of these businesses.

The volunteer mentor should either be:

• An experienced entrepreneur,

• A business consultant,

• A middle to senior manager,

• A postgraduate student,

• An experienced SMME development practitioner,

• A professional mentor and coach or

• A retired professional

For further details on the nature of the businesses under the Ithubalentsha Micro Enterprise Programme and to access application forms to become a mentor, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

With your help, we can open up new possibilities and more young lives can be changed!
