Information on the project:
With just under a month to go before the local government elections, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Executive Chairperson Andile Lungisa, joined by Provincial Advisory Board Chairperson Ayanda Matiti, will this week host a youth voter education campaign in Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape under the theme “Youth Vote, celebrate democracy”.
During the event Lungisa will address young people in the Alfred Nzo District municipality on the importance of youth involvement in public participation processes including elections. Public participation processes are the cornerstone of South Africa’s democracy as such it is important for young people to take part and define their own development in respective communities.
Through their activism young people hold the responsibility of ensuring that youth development is accelerated at local government level by ensuring that public representatives are held accountable to continue delivering services. For a while the NYDA has been lobbying for increased participation of young people in the planning of municipalities priority plans including Integrated Development Plans (IDP). In his address Lungisa will give an account of the work done by the NYDA in the Eastern Cape province including available opportunities for young people.
The event will include the participation of the Department of Home Affairs, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and a presentation on potential funding opportunities for higher education students by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
