Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment in the context of youth Development in South Africa: What is the benefit for Youth Owned SMEs?
Prior to 1994, the apartheid government systematically excluded African, Indian and coloured people from meaningful participation in the country’s economy. The harsh policies of the apartheid system inevitably created economic inequalities in terms of income, education, opportunity, gender income gaps and poverty among South Africans. In 1994 when a democratically elected government came into power most white people still had a bigger share in the economy, so there was a need for economically liberating the people who were disadvantaged (youth included) by the previous government.

“User-Cooperatives” – Towards Best Practices in Rural Development
The National Youth Development (NYDA) is piloting a co-operative development model that seeks to provide a range of support services that address the needs of co-operators at an individual level and co-operatives at a collective level. This is an interesting model, given that the Agency has in the past celebrated few successes on youth co-operatives development.
