Trailblazers are
the pioneers, innovators and lifelong learners who will help to make the world
a better place. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in severe economic and
social impact around the world. Young people are particularly vulnerable to the
disruptions the pandemic has caused and have been at risk of being left behind
in education, economic opportunities as well as health and wellbeing during a
critical stage of their life development.
We need dynamic
young people who will ‘grab the bull by the horns’ and find solutions that will
effectively change the landscape of the country. Young people who have inspired and continue
to inspire a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to tackle future
needs and not-yet-created industries.
The NYDA would like to recognise young people
who are in the forefront of contributing and positively to the economy of this
beautiful country. These are young people who are active citizens and are true
ambassadors in their own communities.
To usher in this new era of leading-edge
risk-takers, each year during Youth Day Commemoration Day we bring on stage and
incorporate outstanding young South Africans who have made a difference not
only in their lives but also those of their communities.
These trailblazers are the President’s special
guests on Youth Day. The COVID 19 pandemic has brought forth a new normal. Our Youth
Month celebrations have also been altered to adhere to our Presidents’ call, to
implement social distancing and promote a safe way of living for everyone. Our
2021 Trailblazers will therefore not enjoy the opportunity of a celebration
with a large number of other young people but will be acknowledged, honoured
and celebrated in other platforms including the media.
South Africa’s young trailblazers boast a
participant base comprising of those who have gone above and beyond their
challenges to succeed in areas including but not limited to:
- Academia
- Entrepreneurship
- Science, Technology and
Innovation
- Leadership development
- Design thinking
These young people are
showcased, celebrated and profiled with the aim of inspiring the youth to apply
themselves to become trailblazers at a young and impressionable age. These
young people have become job creators and employ other young people. Therefore,
the Trailblazers Campaign 2021 continues to urge young people to emulate them
and ensure that South Africa produces more and more skills that are needed by
the economy and to also skills that enrich our culture and heritage.
